Here are the basics of what is going on:
- When Elena and Matt went off Wickery Bridge last season, Stefan saved Matt first, leaving Elena to drown.
- Because Elena had vampire blood in her at the time, she came back as a vampire.
- Elena never wanted to be a vampire.
- Stefan feels guilty for not saving Elena.
- Damon is angry that Stefan bothered to save Matt instead of the woman they both love.
The really interesting part of this scene comes from Stefan's apparent alternate plan -- instead of turning Elena into a vampire, Stefan wants to make her alive and human again.
Wait, what? They can do that?
The answer is, of course, no. Not so far anyway. As Damon points out, turning a transitioning vampire back into a living human has never happened in all of history. So it probably will not work here as well.
What makes Stefan think there is even a chance? My guess is Bonnie. After going against standard witch practice at the end of season 3, Bonnie is not interested in "You can't do that!" statements. Plus, Elena is Bonnie's best friend. There's no way that the vampire-hating witch would let Elena turn if there was any other alternative.
Will Bonnie succeed in saving Elena from her vampire fate? Or is Damon right that you can't reverse turning into a vampire? How much conflict are we going to see between the Salvatore brothers because of all of this?
We will find out when The Vampire Diaries
season 4 begins on Thursday, October 11 at 8pm on The CW.
