We won't get to see vampire Elena in action until The Vampire Diaries season 4 returns in October. But we can now get a glimpse of the newest vampire in a photo. Keep reading to check it out.

Like most of the undead on The Vampire Diaries, we shouldn't expect big changes in Elena's appearance. You know, unless she's about to eat someone. In this photo, released first on TVGuide.com, Elena does look a little bit hungry, but it's not quite feeding time.

So what are we looking at here? Nina Dobrev, the actress who plays Elena (and who has previous vampire experience in her alternate role of Katherine) explained the photo to TVGuide.com: "She doesn't want to eat people, so she's hungry -- and moody."

That makes sense. Considering that we don't want Elena to die and disappear from The Vampire Diaries, that moodiness and hunger will have to go away at some point. Whether the hunger solution comes from bags of donated blood from fluffy bunnies or from an actual, living human remains to be seen. Vampires being vampires, however, that last option is definitely possible.

If your memory does not extend all the way back to the season 3 finale, you may need a reminder of how Elena got to be a vampire. In short, Elena bumped her head, drank some tequila, passed out, was declared better and then drowned. Dr. Meredith Fell revealed, after Elena's drowning death, that the head injury was, in fact, life-threatening and treated with vampire blood.

Thus, Elena became a vampire.

For those of you keeping count, that means we have six out of nine main Vampire Diaries characters in the vampire (or hybrid) population. We may not get too much of the "diaries" portion of the title, but at least the vampire numbers are booming.

The Vampire Diaries season 4 premieres on Thursday, October 11 at 8pm on The CW.

What do you expect from Elena, now that she is a vampire? Will she feed on humans or not? How will the others react to the change? Leave your comments below!
