Brenda Song's character on
The Suite Life of Zack and Cody is known for her over the top fashion sense, but the 19-year-old actress says that in real life, she'd rather dress down than dress up.
In fact, for the upcoming holidays, Song intends on draping herself with red-and-green novelty print scarves, and not with sparkly sequins and lush feather boas, items that are characteristic of her onscreen persona.
“Christmas is the only time you can wear red and green and get away with it. I have an awesome red-and-green plaid scarf. You feel like you're in the spirit when you put it on,” Song, who plays hotel heiress London Tipton on
The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, told the
Associated Press. “All my red dresses get pulled out at Christmas.”
She also said that for certain family gatherings, she opts to wear more casual clothes.
“We used to get dressed up but the last couple of years we've come to realize you can play and laugh better in jeans. We found a good medium,” Brenda Song said.
Song has been in the entertainment industry since she was only six years old. She has done several television series for Disney, including the comedy
Phil of the Future, wherein she played the hip and trendy Tia during the show's first season.
She landed her role on
The Suite Life of Zack and Cody in 2005. For her audition, she read for both London and Maddie Fitzpatrick, a role that was ultimately given to
High School Musical star
Ashley Tisdale.
While Brenda Song's fashion preferences may be far from London's, she admits that she has had some extreme moments, including a Spice Girls phase and an L.A. Lakers period, during which she only wore clothes that honored the basketball team.
She has also not shied away from wearing more mature outfits. Just a few years ago, she and Tisdale dressed as sexy versions of Mrs. Claus, which called for them to wear very short skirts. Song wanted to go as Mrs. Claus again to a family get-together, but knowing that her 5 and 6-year-old cousins and two younger brothers would be there, decided to wear black jeans instead.
“Most teenage girls tend to go a little overboard,” Song told the
Associated Press. “You have to remember less is more.”
