The Sopranos may be over, but the show has one more opportunity to leave with a really big bang at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards.
When the top emmy nominees were announced on Thursday, the HBO drama series emerged at the top of the pack with 15 nominations. Should all 15 materialize into awards in September, the show, which ran for six seasons on the cable network, would have a total of 33 Primetime Emmys under its belt.
Six of the 15 Emmy nods belong to actors.
James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) is up for an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy, while
Michael Imperioli (Christopher Moltisanti) is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Edie Falco (Carmela Soprano) earned a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, while both
Aida Turturro (Janice Soprano) and
Lorraine Bracco (Dr. Jennifer Melfi) received nods for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Tim Daly, who played J.T. Dolan in four episodes of
The Sopranos, has been nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor. This is Daly’s first Primetime Emmy award nomination.
"I was totally oblivious to it,” Daly said of his Emmy nod. “I was driving to work and saw a message on my cell phone and trying to figure out what was going on. When I found out I was nominated, I didn't even know what it was for.
“My dad (James Daly) won an Emmy and my sister Tyne won a million Emmys. I've always thought of acting as a congenital disease, and getting an Emmy nomination is one of the happy side effects,” Daly said.
Series regulars Imperioli, who last won an Emmy for his role in 2003, also expressed joy over his nomination.
“It feels good to be nominated always... I'm happy that the show did so well with the nominations ‘cause it is the last year and we all get to go out there together one more time and it's a good way to go out,” Imperioli said.
Turturro described her nomination as “a nice little bonus,” saying that it will give her the opportunity to reunite with her
Sopranos co-stars.
"Just being with the family and knowing that the show lives on a little longer is really something special,” she said.
Aside from the acting nods,
The Sopranos is also nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Writing For a Drama Series, Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series, Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series and Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (one-hour).
