SAG Honors 'Sopranos' and Comedy Writers

James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, The SopranosIf you watched the Screen Actors Guild Awards, you may have had some flashbacks to the most recent Emmy Awards. At the Emmys, The Sopranos and 30 Rock took home the awards for Outstanding Drama and Comedy Series. At the SAG Awards, those shows dominated over all else, taking five of the top six TV awards.

On the drama side, The Sopranos swept, taking the awards for Ensemble, as well as individual acting honors for stars James Gandolfini and Edie Falco. On the comedy side, 30 Rock reaped awards for its leads, Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, while fellow NBC comedy The Office won for Best Ensemble. Both shows feature casts that include writers, and their wins can be seen as a continued sign of SAG's support of the writers' strike.

The Sopranos went to black more than seven months ago, and in the final big awards show of the drama's eligibility, it received a huge farewell. This is nothing new, as it's the third SAG Award for both Gandolfini and Falco, adding to the already weighty award mantles of each. For viewers watching it home, it came as a bit of a shock that the show won for its ensemble, since the people at the ceremony seemed to be supporting AMC's Mad Men. The 1960s advertising series was the only show to receive applause when it was announced, indicating that while The Sopranos got the glory, Mad Men has quite a few fans among actors.

The comedy side was a respite from the dull drama honors, as 30 Rock and The Office are easily two of the funniest shows on TV. While Baldwin was not in attendance, Fey's acceptance speech was hilarious as expected, a pleasant treat for fans who missed out a Tina Fey speech when she won the Golden Globe earlier this month. Fey was self-deprecating, comparing herself to a hat rack when compared to scene partner Baldwin, who is the Fred Astaire in her analogy. She also took a quick second to thank SAG for its support of the writers' strike.

The Office win also represented a win for writers, as a part of the acting ensemble also serve as writers on the show. Jenna Fischer, accepting the award, thanked the crew and mentioned how much they wanted to return to work.
