Russell James Talks About Getting 'The Shot'
Tonight was the third episode of The Shot, VH1's new series about the search for the next great fashion photographer. I find myself continuing to watch despite the somewhat ho-hum nature of the whole thing. This week was a doubly-challenging episode, forcing the photographers to work with the heights and depths.

Last week's episode of The Shot was also a double-whammy of challenges. The photographers had to work with both children and animals. Host Russell James recently offered up some advice for others on how to deal with these sometimes difficult subjects.

Russell says, “Staying calm and being nice is about the best advice. When you start to channel stress to children or, for that matter, animals, they just become mirrors, rebounders. No matter how much it starts to suck, no matter how close your client is to having a nervous breakdown, you've just got to smile, relax and take it easy. If the shot's not working, drop the camera and engage the kids. That means talking to kids about anything else other than what you're doing.”

Some viewers have also wondered what kind of equipment the contestants are using on The Shot. Russell says, “I chose all the equipment were using on the show. It was hard to choose, but I went with a Canon 1Ds because it's probably the most widely used digital camera on the planet right now. It's also probably the easiest digital camera to use. I didn't want this to be a competition of who could use the fanciest camera. Digital photography made this show possible, and, in fact, has changed the face of commercial photography as a whole. For a relatively small amount of money, everyone can go buy a camera and come up with great photographs, so long as they know how to shoot.”
