Born on April 8, 1964 in Brooklyn, New York, Cheryl "Salt" James is the former member of the female rap trio, Salt-N-Pepa, which included Sandy Denton and Latoya Hanson. In 1985, Latoya Hanson was replaced by Dee Dee Roper. James and Denton, who were both nursing students at the time, met at Queensborough Community College, where they started rapping together. Their band was formed in 1986, and they released their album, Hot, Cool & Vicious. Following their successful first album, the group released a couple more albums until they ventured into acting and other activities. Finally, the group disbanded in 2002, and left to reside in Long Island with her husband, Gavin and their two children, Corrin and Chapele.

Cheryl "Salt" James reunites with college buddy Sandy Denton in VH1's reality series, The Salt N Pepa Show. The show chronicles the two women as they try to resolve five-year-old issues and start over their relationship and take another shot at making wonderful music just as they did way back then.
