The Real World used to be about more than a bunch of 20-somethings, without direction, who liked to party and hook up with each other. Once upon a time, they dealt with social issues such as race, religion, and sexuality. These days, most scenes for the MTV reality show are filmed in the bar or the bedroom. The fights are bigger, the meltdowns are scarier, and the booze is always flowing while cameras wait to capture a television worthy moment. With so much debauchery to be had in Hollywood, why did MTV choose to cast not one, but two former addicts on their show this season?

Sometimes it makes me uncomfortable to watch..... It just seems like these people are always drunk.
Joey Kovar was scary from episode 1. It was apparent that he had several issues that he was going to need to deal with. The first was his alcohol problem, which he openly admitted from the get go. The second was his anger problem, which threatened the safety of everyone in the house. When he hit rock bottom and flipped out on his housemates two episodes ago, it became uncomfortable for the viewers to watch. Why didn’t MTV step in sooner, especially when two of his female roommates were literally hiding from him? It was only when Joey called producers in that someone came to help him. They offered him a stint in rehab which he took and is currently, not featured on the show.
Soon after Joey owned up to his alcohol addiction this season, his fellow cast member
Brianna Taylor admitted that she was once a meth addict. When she drunkenly planted her lips on a random girl at the bar, her mouth immediately began to tingle. The girl, it seemed, had been doing coke, and Brianna tasted it right away. It brought up cravings in her and, though she dealt with them well, it certainly opened the door for her to fall off the wagon.
Living in
The Real World house and being on the show could probably turn a sane person crazy. Why, then, did the show feel the need to bring on two people who already were clearly in need of help? Is a reality show really the place to get clean or stay sober? Both have violent pasts and both are very unpredictable. In some ways, it could be argued that the two are good television but it seems that the show’s casting department is starting to cross a line that puts housemates and those around them in serious danger.
Should Joey and Brianna have been cast on The Real World?
