Ruthie Alcaide, one of the seven cast members of
The Real World: Hawaii, was at Odessa Community College on Tuesday, August 28, telling students about the unpleasant side of alcohol consumption and how it has affected her life. The talk was held at the school's Deadrick Hall Auditorium.
“People were telling me I actually passed out at the bar,” Alcaide said, describing her experiences during the taping of
The Real World: Hawaii. “It's kind of funny now, but I think I just wanted to crawl under a rock after the show aired.”
On
The Real World: Hawaii, Ruthie Alcaide became notorious for her heavy drinking. She often passed out at bars and acted inappropriately, once giving her boss's wife a table dance. On the first episode, she lost consciousness, prompting her housemates to call the paramedics. During a subsequent drinking binge, she threw a drinking glass, shattering it in the process. Her housemates and two sisters told her to go to rehab, lest they evict her from the house. Although she felt betrayed, Alcaide decided to go to rehab, and returned to the house only after she completed her treatment.
Despite her negative experiences with alcohol, Ruthie Alcaide did not urge students at Odessa College to veer away from drinking. She did, however, tell them to be cautious.
“One of the things I learned is moderation,” she said. “I'm not saying don't drink — just be prepared to pay the consequences.”
Cicely Miller, students activity coordinator, said the board decided to ask Ruthie Alcaide to speak at their school because they believe she has valuable lessons to impart.
“In college there are students drinking and alcohol abuse,” Miller said. “She's seen the dangers and how alcohol can affect your body.”
Although he originally went to the talk for extra credit, Zane Williamson, 18, admitted that he learned a lot from Alcaide.
“I learned a lot about rape and drinking,” he said. “I also learned the dangers of drinking and driving. She's also pretty hot.”
