Gathering all of the past
The Real World cast members and reliving some of the show's most memorable moments for the upcoming awards bash is sure to make for an exciting and fun evening, but viewers can expect for a more serious and somber tone to hit the event as well.
Former
Real World cast members Pedro Zamora and
Frankie Abernathy will be posthumously honored at the special, which is scheduled to air on Saturday, March 29. Pedro Zamora was originally from
The Real World: San Francisco, the third season of MTV's hit reality series. Zamora had been HIV-positive at the time of his participation in the series, and romantically involved with Sean Sasser. The couple's commitment ceremony was featured on the season finale. Zamora lost his battle with AIDS the day after the finale aired.
Frankie Abernathy was a cast member on
The Real World: San Diego, and during her time on the show, her battle with cystic fibrosis became one of the show's focal points. She was diagnosed with the disease at the tender age of three, and whilst on the show, exhibited many symptoms of the genetic disorder, including difficulty breathing and immune-system impairment. She left the show before the season ended, and last June, passed away at the age of 25.
Both
Real World cast members helped to raise awareness about their diseases. Zamora was an HIV and AIDS educator, and his presence helped to shed light on issues concerning the disease and homophobia. His work was recognized by many, including former president Bill Clinton, who made an official statement praising Zamora for his efforts. Abernathy, meanwhile, put a face to cystic fibrosis, and brought further attention to chronic lung disease.
On a lighter note,
The Real World fans have only until today to cast their votes for their favorites in the 13 categories, including “best fight,” “best meltdown,” “hottest male,” hottest female,” and “best season.”
