MJ Garrett was featured as a member of the cast in the fifteenth season of the hit MTV reality television series The Real World, which was set in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born on May 28, 1980, and has been described as an attractive young blonde man from the South. He has also been said to have a warm heart. Garrett would eventually go on to pursue higher learning at Vanderbilt University, from where he graduated after majoring in Human and Organizational Development. He was likewise an accomplished sportsman during his college days, claiming the position of a star football player.

While his original ambition was to go pro and play in the NFL, he was forced to give it up when the league turned him down. During the time of the show, before Garrett moved to Philadelphia, he was in a relationship which had gone on for two months, a relationship he tried to keep alive even as he struggled with adjusting to his new roommates in The Real World. During an interview, he explained that he auditioned for the show simply because he needed a change from working at the nine to five desk job he landed right after graduation.
