Chris Beckman was featured as a member of the cast in the eleventh season of the MTV reality television series The Real World, which was set in Chicago. He was born on June 12, 1977 in Brockton, Massachusetts, where he was raised by his single mother after his parents divorced when he was three years old. Though he has always stayed close to her, in recent years he has also begun to try reconciling with his father as well. Beckman has worked as an artist, and is also openly gay, though he has undergone a struggle in the past with severe alcoholism.

To help treat his addiction, he regularly attends meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, and prior to his stint on the show had stayed sober for eight months. Despite his homosexuality, his sexual passion and drive has been described as one that appeals to both men and women. Beckman was also said to be slightly conflicted about his attractive appearance, which he believed would just keep certain people looking at the surface and not make a real effort to get to know him for his true self as a person. While on the show, he finds employment as a bartender, in odd contrast to his issues with alcoholism.
