It's been a week since
The Real Housewives of New York City took to the air. The spin-off of
The Real Housewives of Orange County, which ended its third season over a month ago, has received rather mixed reviews at this early stage.
One of the Orange County housewives thinks
The Real Housewives of New York City aren't too different from her and her Orange County gal pals. Meanwhile, a noted television critic from the Big Apple's
Daily News doesn't think the women on
The Real Housewives of New York City are fair representations of anything remotely close to the definition of a housewife at all.
“I was a little surprised with the women,” Lauri Peterson from parent program
The Real Housewives of Orange County, admitted. “I was thinking that every woman would be beautiful brunettes with chiseled features and business suits, hitting the streets walking as fast as they can. But the women didn't' seem that different than us - maybe a little more uptight, a little busier.”
For his part,
New York Daily News' David Hinckley wrote, “Saying these women represent New York housewives is like saying Alex Rodriquez represents the New York working class.”
Despite the unflattering review,
Bethenny Frankel, one of
The Real Housewives of New York City, remains upbeat and unperturbed.
“It's just entertaining,” Frankel, a natural food chef, runner-up in 2005's
Martha Stewart Apprentice, and the sole unmarried cast member of the show, countered. “How many housewives are there really? We don't even have houses in New York City. It's not to be taken so seriously.”
Frankel's co-star,
LuAnn de Lesseps, a countess by virtue of marrying the man whose family built the Suez and Panama canals, also tried to put things in perspective.
“There are 8 million people living in New York City,” de Lesseps said in an interview. “Our lives are different from a lot of people's lives. A lot of people would like to live like us, and a lot of people would like to kill us. But we've got a big audience so far.”
