If you're a fan of The Real Housewives of New Jersey
, then you've already heard about Staub's shady past ---as depicted in the 1996 book entitled Cop Without a Badge: The Extraordinary Undercover life of Kevin Maher
. The book, which was discovered by her New Jersey
costars on the show's fourth episode, is written by Charles Kipps and is described as the true story of an ex-conman turned criminal informant, with accounts revealing Staub's arrest in 1986 for charges of extortion, kidnapping and drug possession, just to name a few.
"I was arrested -- what is the big deal?" Staub told People
, adding, "I haven't gotten as much as a traffic ticket in all these years."
"It was such a lifetime ago," said Staub, who asserts that her criminal past is long behind her.
One thing she denies, however, is being a hooker.
"I was never a prostitute. Never," Staub said, adding that that her ex-husband Maher's "recollection of me is completely absurd."
Then again, Staub didn't disprove her ex's claims that she boasted of having bedded 1,000 men.
"I do enjoy a healthy sex life, but with one partner [at a time]," she explained.
As for the book's references to her heavy cocaine use? "I was a pothead. Period," Staub said.
Despite all the criticisms Staub endured after her dirty laundry was aired on The Real Housewives of New Jersey
, she remains unapologetic about going on the show ---explaining that the she had told her daughters, Christine, 15, and Jillian, 11, all about her past even before the show aired.
"I have no regrets," she said.
