Last week, The Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice was sentenced to 15 months in prison and her husband Joe Giudice was sentenced to 41 months in prison after pleading guilty to fraud. Last night, they sat down with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live to discuss their sentences.

“I feel like I’m numb, it’s surreal,” Teresa told Andy about how she felt when she heard she’d be going to prison. “All I keep thinking about is my daughters. I’ve had sleepless nights. It was very unexpected.”

Teresa admited that what has gotten her into trouble here is her lack of attention paid to the things she was signing. Now where these “things” were coming from, she doesn’t specify. Joe assures Andy that it wasn’t him who was giving her illegal documents to sign, but the bank.

“I do need to read things before I sign them,” Teresa said. “I do need to understand things before I sign them. I’m a trustworthy person, I believe what they say. I have to make sure I fully understand or find a lawyer. I want to get better at that.”

Joe expressed more regret for the fact that Teresa’s sentence than his own. When he plead guilty, he had no idea it would send Teresa to jail.

“The plea deal was the best way to go. I expected me, I wasn’t expecting her [to get time]. I took full responsibility for everything. She had no part in my businesses. She don’t deserve to go. “

Teresa also admitted that the sentence came as a surprise. When Andy asked her why it was a surprise since the plea deal included possible jail time, the details seemed a bit fuzzy for Teresa.

“I didn’t understand that part,” she said. “I thought my lawyer was going to fight for me.”

Teresa isn’t worried so much about how she will manage in prison, but how her daughters will manage without her.

“I’m frightened, scared, depressed, I can’t imagine not being there. They need their mom,” Teresa said emotionally. “My husband’s a great father and a great husband but I do everything with the girls. I’m old school, I’m the one that’s hands-on, all I said to my husband is please take care of our daughters.”

When Andy asked how their home life was going to be after Teresa had to surrender herself to the state on January 5, 2015, Joe quipped, “I guess I’m going to be the housewife.”

The second part of Teresa and Joe’s interview will air on Thursday on Watch What Happens Live.
