The Originals are headed to New Orleans to regain control of the town. It won't be easy as Marcel, Klaus' protege, has a firm grip on the Vampires and Witches there. Will the Original family be able to come together and exert their power?
The Originals originally aired as an episode of The Vampire Diaries season 4. The premiere episode that will air on Thursday, October 3 is not the same episode, though it takes place over the same time period and does include a few identical scenes.
I highly recommend that people watch the extended pilot either before or after they watch The Originals premiere. It's told from Elijah's perspective and provides more insight into New Orleans, the characters, and the tone of the new show.
