Fresh from his controversial hosting duties on the Golden Globes, the star of the British and the original version of The Office is now rumored to appear on this season's US counterpart, either as David Brent or maybe as someone else.

Ricky Gervais, who has successfully invaded the US thanks to Ghost Town and The Invention of Lying, has reportedly not "ruled out the opportunity" according to his publicist, as quoted in The Independent.

The British version of The Office, which in 2005 was adapted by NBC with Steve Carell on its helm, has won two Golden Globes itself. Carell, for his part, has won a Golden Globe and an Emmy in 2006, as well as a TCA Award. The series itself has won Outstanding Comedy Series in the Emmys and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in the SAGs.

Gervais' Globes hosting, the first for any British man in a decade and a half, had split critics, with some calling it crass and unfunny and others describing it tame for the comedian's standards.

"Gervais didn't make much of an impression as host," says the Chicago Tribune, "except when he was biting the hands of those who'd invited him to play ringmaster at the somewhat subdued ceremony."

Meanwhile, Radar Online applauded his efforts, "Ricky Gervais was on fire Sunday bringing the laughs from the audience with a risque and hilarious introduction, taking time to make digs at NBC and their ongoing Leno/Conan fiasco."
