Ricky Gervais, the comedy mastermind behind the original, UK version of The Office
, has written an episode, with writing partner Stephen Merchant, for the American version of the show. Gervais and Merchant were asked by producers early this year if they would write an episode and the pair were quite keen to do so, seeing as they're big fans of the American version of The Office
The episode, entitled “The Convict†is set to air on November 30th, which just happens to be the last day of sweeps. Do you think that NBC will hype the episode? There was previous speculation among fans that Gervais himself, along with other original Office
cast members, would make an appearance on the NBC version. Unfortunately, this is not the case, for now at least.
“The Convict†is about Michael
dealing with the revelation that one of his new employees has a prison record. Michael does his best to be supportive. Also, Andy (Ed Helms) decides to make a move on Pam
and gets some “advice†from Jim
on the subject.
Ricky Gervais is an extremely funny man and I very much look forward to the episode, but there is a distinct possibility that it will disappoint. The comic sensibilities of the British and American versions of The Office
are different. Way different. Just look at the language. I like the English version of the show, but I can barely understand what they're saying. Will Gervais be able to adapt to the American vernacular?
However, the premise seems funny enough, so we probably shouldn't worry. It's The Office
, after all.
