Steve Carell as Michael Scott
Michael Gary Scott is portrayed by Steve Carell on NBC's
The Office. The Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton, Michael never got to complete his college studies because he lost his savings in a pyramid scheme. However, his talent in sales talk led the company to attain some large accounts.
He is a socially awkward man who thinks of himself as an office comedian, but his jokes are not at all funny. Instead, his jokes are often seen as inappropriate, offensive and mean. He lacks self-awareness, but is extremely egotistical. He dislikes not being given attention, and is oftentimes lonely. An insecure man, he is usually spineless in dealing with his staff. He also intently points out other people's mistakes and character flaws, especially when it is to his favor.
The death of his immediate predecessor as office manager, Ed Truck, made him realize that he might die one day alone and friendless. Despite this, he did not change his selfish ways, and even insisted on hosting seminars regarding topics that his audience know more about than he does. These instances always led to disastrous and embarrassing situations, as he tries to stay on top of them.
Salesman and officemate Dwight Schrute is the closest person to Michael as Dwight hero-worships him a lot. Liking the attention, Michael gives Dwight a lot more work load than he deserves, even naming him as his assistant.
Toby Flenderson, the human resources representative, is the bane of Michael's existence as the two never get along. Michael is cruel to him, as he insults him through his hurtful remarks. Michael doesn't know, however, that Toby collects employee complaints against him, and stores it in the office warehouse.
Michael is also quite tactless, as he tends to reveal personal information about staff members to the entire office. In one incident, Michael read aloud the confidential complaints of the staff, which were collected by Toby. Also, he was responsible for disclosing Jim Halpert's feelings for Pam Beesly. His tactlessness has often led to chaos in the office, which he does not care about much.
