The Office is played by Mindy Kaling. Kelly, a customer service representative at the Scranton branch of paper distributor Dunder-Mifflin, is the office chatterbox who enjoys discussing topics such as boys, dating and celebrity gossip. She is bubbly and somewhat immature, aside from playing dumb sometimes. She is of Indian descent and has four living sisters, as her other sister passed away. Her parents were in an arranged marriage. Apart from gossiping, Kelly has a passion for shopping and clothing.
Kelly is also somewhat intense. During Diversity Day, the branch manager Michael Scott held a diversity raining for the staff, wherein he asked them what race they were attracted to. Dwight immediately replied, "Indian," earning him a curious and alarmed look from Kelly. She then leaves for a customer meeting and returns to the training. Upon her arrival, the staff was playing a game wherein they all wore a card on their foreheads, indicating the race they had to act like. Michael became frustrated because the staff weren't playing properly so he approached Kelly and started getting offensive, offering her "googi googi." Fed up, she slapped him and walked away.
In season 2, Kelly received more insults from Michael as he awarded her the Spicy Curry award at the 8th Annual Dundie Awards. She dressed up as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz on Halloween, and consequently received an insult from Michael, who suggested that she wore a soccer uniform and dress like Jess Bhamra, a character of Indian descent in Bend it like Beckham.
Kelly had a non-again, off-again relationship with Ryan Howard, with whom she hinted that she wanted to get married and have kids as soon as possible. However, the relationship made a bad turn when Kelly started to become possessive of him. Her manipulative ways took effect on Take Your Daughter to Work Day when Stanley took his daughter, Melissa to work. Apparently, Melissa developed a crush on Ryan, and Kelly immediately lied and told Stanley that Ryan tried to hit on his daughter. Enraged, Stanley berated a terrified Ryan.
