The Controversy Between 'The O.C.' and 'Gossip Girl'
Wednesday, August 29, 2007

the o.c.Ever since The O.C. got canceled, many have been waiting for Josh Schwartz's next teen drama creation. His upcoming series, Gossip Girl, in which his fellow O.C. writer-producer Stephanie Savage is also credited for, has created such a buzz of excitement that the CW decided to move its premiere from September 27 to September 19 at 9pm.  But while many are eager to catch the controversial show, there are also those that refer to Gossip Girl as “The O.C. with winter coats.”

Although Gossip Girl is based on the novel of Cecily von Ziegesar, the series has the same elements of The O.C., which includes a young attractive cast, a world of wealth, socially struggling teens and a dose of the latest musical scores.  Of course, like most teen dramas, it also entails a lot of drama, sex, scandal and betrayal, and is set in the world of private high schools.

Gossip Girl centers on the lives of socialite young adults in the New York's Upper East Side and stars Blake Lively, who is now being compared to O.C.'s Mischa Barton by many bloggers, Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford, Penn Badgley, and Taylor Momsen. It also features the voice of Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars).

Is Gossip Girl just another hype-up version of The O.C.? For Schwartz, there's a big difference.

“The Upper East Side is its own strange world,” Schwartz said.  “I probably knew a little bit more about this world than I did about Orange County.  It's a world you really have to be born into to understand. It's one of the challenges we had in adapting the book.  How do you take a world that feels so exclusive and open it up so that even if you're not from that world, you still understand it?”

Viewers will just have to catch and see the difference this coming fall.
