DJ Jazzy Jeff is an African-American record producer, closely associated with his longtime friend and partner Will Smith. He was originally named Jeffrey Townes, and born on January 22, 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Along with Smith, he formed the duo known as DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, producing and selling several platinum albums. Together, the two of them earned the first-ever Grammy Award for rap music. He continues to work as a record producer for soul, R&B and hip-hop, running his own company known as A Touch of Jazz. He also remains on good terms with Smith, both of them performing together occasionally during live concerts and collaborating on songs.
Jazz is played by DJ Jazzy Jeff in the classic NBC television comedy series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He is Will’s best friend from inner-city Compton, though he’s crude and not very bright. He also has a crush on Hilary, who occasionally also flirts with him in return. Jazz is rude practically all of the time, especially adept at irritating and aggravating Philip each time he shows up. Philip then literally hoists him up and throws him out the door of the house every single time, in a long-running gag throughout most episodes.
