The Following may not return until 2014, but we have some teases for the upcoming season straight from the show's two leads, Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy, from the press room at San Diego Comic-Con. Joe Carroll will be back and season two will begin with a time jump that finds the characters in new places in their lives.

Check out the full video interviews with Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy.

Kevin Bacon interview

Highlights from the interview:

  • Scary stuff and surprises will continue. Season 2 jumps forward which allows characters to be in a different place.
  • Ryan will be in a different. Initially it will appear that Ryan has moved past the sadness and tragedy.
  • They work to peel away a layer of the character every episode.
  • Ryan will be teaching when the show picks up.
  • The shows been more about the differences between Ryan and Joe not the similarities
  • Besides the serial killer thing, Ryan admired Joe. He was a people person, well-read, and knowledge of literature. All characteristics that Ryan doesn't have.
  • To see Ryan as a teacher is weird, but he hopes that in a strange way he learned something from Joe. Ryan won't have the ability to hold a classroom's attention the way Joe did though.
  • Bacon wants to explore romance, love, friendship, sadness, anger, addiction, sex, violence. All those things. The characters are complex.
  • Monumental moments in life - a baby?!?
James Purefoy interview

Highlights from the interview:

  • James Purefoy will return in season 2. Though he is a bit coy by saying reminding us that the show often has flashbacks.
  • He was asked to grow the beard. "This is me gone feral." Though, if he has to shave it off, it will be a challenge for the make up people because of his tan.
  • "There's lots still to come." Joe was selfish last season. "Of course, he's selfish. He's a f**k'n serial killer."
  • Joe's objective was to get his family back together again. The plan was all about getting his wife and child back.
  • Purefoy was continually surprised at what Joe did. He was specifically surprised that Joe killed Agent Parker. Though, Joe's so diabolical that nothing should have been a surprise.
  • Purefoy would like to see Joe go even darker. "More murder, more mischief, more mayhem on a vast scale."
  • If Joe is alive then he would reflect on his failure and look to see where he went wrong. The big moment for him was when his wife stabbed him. That "broke the force field in a way and his dream of getting back with her."
  • Joe was shocked that Claire did that to him.
