And the fourth
American Idol seat goes to Ellen DeGeneres.
Fox has announced that the Emmy-winning talk show host and comedian has joined Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi on the Idol judging panel, starting from the ninth season next year.
The move follows guest stints from celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Kristin Chenoweth, Mary J. Blige, Neil Patrick Harris, Joe Jonas and Kelly Clarkson.
"I'm thrilled to be the new judge on
American Idol," DeGeneres said in a statement. "I've watched since the beginning, and I've always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I'll save from not having to text in my vote."
"I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the
American Idol family," show creator Simon Fuller said. "Her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel. I can't wait for the next season to begin."
"She brings with her an immense warmth and compassion that is almost palpable," executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz said. "She is one of America's foremost entertainers, and we cannot wait to have her join our team."
Ellen's been known for her support of past Idol contestants, with finalists making guest appearances on her daytime talk show,
The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The show, which just started its seventh season this week, has won 29 Daytime Emmys. She also hosted last year's
Idol Gives Back special. She rose to prominence after starting as a stand-up comic, going on to star in her very own sitcom,
Ellen, which earned her acclaim from the Emmys and the Peabody Awards. The one-time Oscar host is also a writer, humanitarian, and yes, Dory on
Finding Nemo.
