The news comes as a bit of a shock, especially since the sci-fi shows aired their final episodes back in September. No one knows why USA waited so long to break this news, but fans of both shows are already starting online petitions and organizing efforts to protest the cancellations. However, it may very well be too little, too late.
In a statement posted on the official message board for
The 4400, series creator Scott Peters said, "We've had a great time bringing you this story and submersing you in the lives of all these incredible characters. Let me raise my metaphorical glass to you all and thank you for being so loyal and so dedicated. I wish we could go on forever, but the party has come to an end."
It's a fact of life that shows get canceled, often before their time. However, I always find it a bit offensive when the creators of long-running shows are given no advance notice, and are given no time to craft a proper finale. Fans deserve closure, and due to this sudden axe swinging it's quite likely that they'll never receive it. If only
Anthony Michael Hall's Johnny Smith could have seen this one coming.
