Geraldo Rivera to Appear in Tonight's 'The Colbert Report'

Geraldo RiveraTonight's episode of The Colbert Report should prove to have another memorable interview for viewers, as journalist, attorney and human rights advocate Geraldo Rivera is scheduled to come on as a guest. Rivera, who at times has appeared on The O'Reilly Factor hosted political pundit Bill O'Reilly, is out to promote his latest literary project, His Panic: Why Americans Fear Hispanics in the U.S.

The interview should be interesting not only because Rivera was sometimes the subject of mockery in The Colbert Report's parent series, The Daily Show, but also because Rivera has made some insulting remarks about comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert in an equally public setting.

“You know, Comedy Central is now a big hit, Stewart and the Colbert guy,” Rivera told O'Reilly while on The O'Reilly Factor in August 2006.  “They make a living putting on video of old ladies slipping on ice and people laughing.  That's their life.  That's their life.  They exist in a small little place where they count for nothing.  The history will be made by those who have affirmative thoughts, who make, you know, innovative suggestions in life and are inclusive.”

Stewart, host of The Daily Show, and Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, responded by inserting some humorous sketches about Rivera's remarks into their respective shows.  Just a few days after Rivera's O'Reilly Factor appearance, Colbert crossed over to Stewart's show, which airs before his, and “forced” his fellow comedian to apologize to Rivera.

“What is it tonight Jon? Which sad old lady's fracture pelvis are you going to be chortling over this time?” Stephen Colbert posed with mock anger.  “Cackling like a hyena, she scrambles along the icy pavement, old bones creaking… crushing at your pant leg, crying, ‘Oh, please young man, stop laughing at me.  Oh won't someone please call Geraldo?'”

Colbert then put Stewart “on notice,” after which Stewart crossed over to The Colbert Report, where they talked about the feud some more and Stewart apologized again to Rivera.

Catch The Colbert Report tonight at 11:30/10:30c on Comedy Central.
