Raymond Cruz portrays short-tempered Detective Julio Sanchez on TNT’s hit drama series,
The Closer, but come 2008, fans can expect to see Cruz on the big screen as he is set to appear in the new comedy film,
Spring Broke.
The movie features three college roommates who decide to go to Cancun for spring break. The three of them expect that all of their wildest fantasies will be fulfilled, but upon arriving in the popular coastal city, their vacation quickly takes a nightmarish turn.
Cruz, who will portray a character named Gil, will co-star with Evan Matthew Weinstein, Reginald Huc, Drew Seltzer, Tom Pelphrey (
Guiding Light), Guillermo Diaz, Akshay Kapoor and Gbenga Akinnagbe (
The Wire). Weinstein will appear as Manny Werner, a devoted boyfriend whose friends, goofball Greg (Seltzer) and ladies man Andre (Huc), convince him to take the trip to Cancun.
Spring Broke will not be Cruz’ first involvement with a film production.
The Closer star has, in fact, appeared in numerous movies throughout his career, often playing a military role. His film credits include
Maid to Order, Twice Dead, Cold Dog Soup, Under Seige, Up Close & Personal, The Substitute, Clear and Present Danger, Alien: Resurrection, From Dusk ‘Til Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money, The Last Marshal, Training Day, Collateral Damage, Brothers in Arms and
10 Tricks.
In television, Cruz made several guest appearances on a variety of shows prior to becoming a regular on
The Closer. Such shows include
CSI: Miami, The Division,
CSI,
24,
Boomtown, Robbery Homicide Division, Harsh Realm,
The Eddie Files, NYPD Blue, Seven Days, The Practice, The X-Files,
Walker, Texas Ranger and
Knots Landing.
Spring Broke is written by Seltzer, Huc and Weinstein, all three of who are also executive-producing the film under Serious West Productions. The production company is currently producing the longest-running Off-Broadway show,
Tony n' Tina’s Wedding. Serious West’s other production credits include
Two Rooms and
A Beautiful Mind of a Gladiator.
