Exclusive Interview: Phil Hawk of 'The Biggest Loser'
Wednesday, October 17, 2007

On last night's episode of The Biggest Loser, the red team forced a tie at elimination.  When the blue team decided the red team's fate, they got rid of their biggest competition, Phil.  He had performed consistently well in challenges, even winning the reward for his team and giving them videos from home.  To date, he has lost a total of 108 pounds and looks forward to coming back for the finale to show off his new and improved self.  Today, Phil spoke to BuddyTV about the forced tie, his teammates' fights with Kim, and working to achieve what was written on his goal shirt.

Below, you will find the complete transcript and mp3 of the interview.

Hey everybody, this is Gina from BuddyTV and I’m talking to Phil, the latest constant to be eliminated from NBC’s The Biggest Loser. How ya doin’, Phil?

Good.

You know, I was really annoyed that you were voted out by the way and I’m sure you probably weren’t too happy either.

Yeah well, it wasn’t the best highlight of the trip but it had to happen sometime. I was surprised it lasted that long.

Well, the first point I wanted to make about that is you’re a guy who comes from a sports background. So I assumed that you would rather go against a tough competitor and win than go against crappy competitors that you know you can beat.

You deal with it. You know, I do have some good background but I like to compete against anybody I guess. Especially going through high school and collegiate sports, you never can take anybody lightly because the person you think may not be the best, turns out to be the best. Soo I guess you look at everybody as a competitor. It just came down to everybody that I saw was a competition to me.

Why would the red team force a tie and have the other team decide? And did you know that’s what was going to happen?

I guess I look at it as ... I personally wanted to force a tie just because if that’s the case I knew who I was voting for if It came down to a tie. Then, I would at least rather have that option to have them possibly say: ‘Okay, well we weren’t going to pick Phil ...’ and, I mean, I can’t count all my outlets out yet. At first you know, I wanted to go to a tie rather than have half the team vote me off.

The blue team seemed like it was very hard for them to have to be the ones to send you home. Did you get that impression from them?

I did. It was nice to know that it wasn’t an easy decision because obviously if it was an easy decision that means you weren’t liked and they want you out of the house. But yeah, it really came across that it was a hard decision for them to make. They didn’t want to make it, but obviously they had to and they all agreed I guess.

Your trainer, Kim, has managed to make both David and Amy really angry on last nights episode. What was your take on the whole situation?

It’s difficult. You put a bunch of overweight people in a situation where we’re fed differently, we’re working out 16hrs a day ... you’re going to be irritable. Granted it is TV and you can’t show everything that went on. It’s not like we weren’t working out. I think Kim was having a bad day, buttons were pushed and ... cameras just happened to be there. I mean, people have asked me if I was ever that way, and yeah there were days when Kim wanted to push me and she knew when to push my buttons and when not to. Everybody can’t be cheery 24/7 but it just happened to be that day with Kim.

When you left the show, you looked like a completely different person than when you started. When did you start to notice a change in your body?

I’d have to say ... it’s weird because even when we were out there people would say: ‘Oh I can tell a big difference,’ but when you look at yourself everyday in the mirror, you still don’t see a difference. I was finding that certain things became easier. For instance, just getting up in the morning ... being able to tie your shoes. Just being able to do the simple things. But to actually see it on my body, I couldn’t put a date on it, it was just slowly where my face started to change. It wasn’t obviously any other portion of the body but I could tell my face getting a little slimmer.

Your goal t-shirt said that you wanted to be a firefighter, how is that going?

It’s going well. I have my ... I’m on a list. The cities not testing, they do a test every two years. They haven’t posted when they’re going to test yet. Technically, I am a firefighter but I can’t go anywhere. But now I don’t think that’ll be a problem, it’s just trying to fit that into my schedule.

Well we can’t wait to see you on the finale. We’re sure you’re going to be a force to be reckoned with when you come back on the scale again.

Always am.

Thanks a lot for your time, Phil.

Thank you!
