The Biggest Loser

NBC Reality
Exclusive Interview: Kae Whang of 'The Biggest Loser'
On last week's episode of The Biggest Loser, contestants seized an opportunity to eliminate one of the biggest threats in the competition.  Before blue team member Kae Whang was eliminated, she won a coveted spot on the cover of Prevention magazine.  The contestants were made over in the last episode and surprised by their loved ones.  Kae's husband came out to see her and the two had an emotional reunion.  A respected player, Kae has always worked her hardest and succeeded since the very beginning.  At this stage in the game, very few want to go up against the best and it was almost a unanimous decision to vote her out after she put up a low number on the scale and fell below the yellow line.  Today, Kae talked to BuddyTV about life after The Biggest Loser and whether or not she thought she was a threat!

Below, you will find the complete transcript and mp3 of the interview.

Hey everybody, it’s Gina from BuddyTV and today I’m talking to Kae from NBC’s The Biggest Loser. Well was being on The Biggest Loser a goal that you had when the show started? Or was this something news that came up for you?

Well, I've always watched the show and I saw that they had casting and we had to actually drive seven hours down there.  It was really spontaneous!

You and your husband had such a nice reunion on the last episode, was it very hard to leave him?

It was because we just got married last year and I hadn’t been away from him for that long. So it was hard. And we missed our one year anniversary on June 9th. So that was really tough for me.

Now on the show you were called the biggest threat, and people were worried about you. Did you see yourself as being that big of a threat to the others?

Not really. I mean I thought everyone worked just as hard and I have to admit, it did kind of bothered me for a while until Bob taught me to own it. I just felt like it shouldn’t have been about being the threat, it should be about working as hard as possible and just trying to change your life. Slowly, I accepted the whole game aspect of it and so I definitely know that to Bob.

And when you were voting when you were on the show, were you trying to get rid of the biggest threats? Or would you rather have gone up against the best in the end if you got to stay?

Definitely in the beginning, I thought maybe I should go along with the game and do the biggest threat thing. But then I thought, why? Why should we vote off the people that deserve to be here who have worked so hard and who deserves The Biggest Loser title? So I decided to just stick with that and not worry about the game aspect of it and just worry about doing the best you can, and being with the people who are trying the best that they can, too.

With three teams this season, if two teams decide to team up and get rid of a player on the third team, it seems really unfair. Did you think it was fair that there was a third black team this season?

I was relieved that the six people didn’t get left behind, because that was a very sad moment. Just knowing that you could be sent home and then for six people go home. Of course it was like, you know, bring it on. It’s like another challenge. But I was happy that they had the chance to come back to campus.

Now when Neil pulled that stunt with gaining all the weight, as a blue team member, what was your opinion on it and how were you feeling?

I was very surprised. Especially with such an enormous number. But the reason I got upset was because I kind of knew what was going on and I felt like I lost a little bit of myself and my integrity. I wish I could have changed things but I think he was trying to convince us that it was for the team, and it was for us. So, I had to keep my loyalties, unfortunately.

You won a great challenge on last weeks episode to be on the cover of Prevention magazine. In fact, I was in the grocery story and I saw you on the cover and I was wondering: ‘Gee, I wonder what Kae must think when she’s in the store and she sees herself on the cover of a magazine.’

Sometimes, I don’t recognize it honestly. When I look at it I was like, it takes a minute for me to say: ‘Oh my gosh, that’s me.’ It’s so amazing and it’s such an honor. I’m so grateful to Prevention for being able to put me on the cover and any time I see it, I think of it as a blessing. Like, I’ve really changed my life and I’m so grateful to them and to The Biggest Loser.

Did you feel any pressure last week doing the live weigh-in? Was it any different that doing it on-set in the show?

Well I think you feel ... not pressure, but you know, it's like  ... I wanted to look my best. This is the time that I can show people who are still in the game or at home that I’m okay, and I’m happy with myself. So I worked a little bit harder just for that live weigh-in, but I actually didn’t know about it until recently. So I think it was a last minute thing and so I wanted to look my best.

How has life been since you’ve been home? And how are you feeling?

Life has been so amazing. First, you don’t really have to play the game anymore, so that was really a relief. But then to see my husband and be able to work out together, it’s amazing. He’s actually lost 30lbs as well and he has been so supportive, and to have friends and family be so supportive of you and join you in this journey it’s just so wonderful. I’ve participated in so many different events, charity events, runs, it’s amazing. There’s not enough time in the day to do all this stuff. It makes life so much more exciting, and you’re looking for the next challenge. We’re actually planning our vacation to be more active and have more purpose to it, so, it’s been so much fun.

Well we really can’t wait to see you on the live finale. You were amazing to watch this season and I’ll be glad to see you again on the show.

Oh, thank you so much.
