Coming on the heels of the news that Mischa Barton landed in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's psychiatric department last week, People
reports that the troubled 23-year-old former O.C.
actress, who ironically stars as a supermodel struggling to stay on top of her game in the face of fierce competition on the new series The Beautiful Life
, has struggled with fluctuating weight and body image.
"She has big self-esteem issues. ... She hates her legs," a source close to Barton said. "She isn't comfortable with her body. It's been a big source of stress and self-hate."
"She had a big problem with those photos of her cellulite. ... She didn't like it," another source added. "That just was something that contributed to her spiraling but she didn't do much to fix it because of her partying."
Another friend of The Beautiful Life
actress told People
the photos upset Barton,"[She was] more pissed off than hurt and she complained a lot about that" - she didn't let them get "to her too much. ... I never saw her diet."
Barton's issues with cellulite and body image can now be added to her list of personal demons, including a DUI arrest, relationship breakups and a hospitalization at a psychiatric ward.
While Barton is "improving and still under care, with the intentions of being able to resume production on The Beautiful Life
next week," the cause of her condition that sent her to rehab remains undisclosed. The Beautiful Life star
was reportedly placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold last Wednesday, with doctors opting to keep Barton hospitalized past the requisite 72 hours of the original evaluation period.
Barton's condition still remains a mystery but various theories have already surfaced, ranging from self-esteem issues to an eating disorder to substance abuse.
