The Bachelor: An Officer and a Gentleman - After the Final Rose Recap

Tessa-Rose-AndyAll right, folks, get ready. While tonight might be a happy night as Andy Baldwin and Tessa Horst reunite after The Bachelor: An Officer and a Gentleman finale, he’s going to have to – once again – run the gauntlet to get to Tessa.

First, three of the women from the show make an appearance to talk about their experiences with host Chris Harrison. We have Amber Alchalabi, Stephanie Tipper and Danielle Imwalle who are back and not looking too thrilled about it.

After a quick video review of their experiences, Amber is first to dish. She says she feels misled. Prior to the rose ceremony in which she was eliminated, she says, she always felt uncertain going into the ceremony. But based on her interactions with Andy that episode, she felt certain that she would be selected and not Danielle. She is also still a little hung up on the whole mature thing, saying that Andy too said she was “the most mature twenty-three year old ever.”

Then Stephanie from South Carolina has a chance to speak, and she seems to possibly have learned a lesson from her time on the show. She says she didn’t realize that Andy also had a strong connection with the other women. She also says she learned that she might come across too harsh, as she thinks she did in Tahoe. It seems really sincere, and that’s cool that someone can go through something that could be embarrassing and bring a positive out of it. Now if only she would have learned something about those eyebrows.

Last to speak is Danielle, and she says, as well, that she was shocked to be eliminated after their fun last date in Hawaii.

But let’s get to the woman we really want to know about. Bevin Powers returns, looking lovely and decked out in a striped dress and with a new hot pink be-dazzled cast on her ankle. They watch her time on the show and it is clearly painful to watch. She tells Chris that she had a sense she was going home in the limo ride to the ceremony. She says when she said in the limo that she couldn’t believe it was happening, she actually meant she couldn’t believe she was about to be rejected.

Now it’s time for Andy to face the music. He comes out and breaks the ice with her by making a friendly comment about her cute cast. But then he gets serious and says that it was the hardest decision ever to decide between the two women. Bevin then tells him that she is grateful to him for the experience, for their shared fun times, and for the opportunity to open her heart. She is very sincere and gracious.

She also says that some things are better left unsaid, but then Chris Harrison asks her doesn’t she want to ask Andy what the “one thing” was that caused him to not pick her.

This question is infuriating. Although Andy hasn’t really articulated it very well, it seems clear that this really just came down to a sort of personal chemistry that has very little to do with someone’s attributes or qualities. By posing the question of the “one thing” that Bevin, ostensibly, lacked, it makes it seem like this whole process was, in fact, some kind of job interview or game show wherein someone with more qualities or skills won the “prize:” the love of a man. Instead, let’s face it: the reality is that connection is a mysterious thing. And clearly while he had a strong connection with Bevin, Tessa and he just somehow fit better and they probably don’t even fully understand themselves why that is.

Andy asks himself the question, and sort of alludes to the above in the answer, but Bevin still seems to see it as all due to some kind of failing in herself when she says that for the healing to happen, she doesn’t want to know why she was rejected.

Nevertheless, she says she has no hard feelings; Tessa was a good friend to her in the house and she wishes them both well before she leaves for the evening.

After a break, it’s time for Andy and Tessa to reunite. It’s very sweet as he picks her up and twirls her around. Tessa is much more effusive than we’ve seen her, but still it’s clear her style is to be more reserved. She says she knows now if she had left when she was having all the doubts, she would have been making the biggest mistake of her life. Andy says he had to work hard to win her, but she “deserves to be chased.” Chris says, echoing the thoughts of many BuddyTV commenters, that he can’t believe Andy picked the girl with the muffin joke. Seriously. I love Tessa, but is that even really a joke?

The two say they have bonded with each other through the secrecy and have had some secret rendezvous. Andy also jokingly alludes to some fall-out for his Grabby Hands persona, saying some Tuesday morning conversations involved a lot of “It’s the past, honey!”

Tessa will be moving to Hawaii to continue the relationship, but when Chris asks about wedding plans, Andy says that Tessa needs baby steps. Andy says they are both realistic and pragmatic and know they need to see how the relationship fares in the real world.

After some banter and q and a with the audience, it’s time to let Andy and Tessa move on. Chris presents them both with a trip to the Inca Trail, the surprising spot where Tessa’s mom found love. It’s a cool present that the adventurous duo seems to appreciate.

Only time will tell if this is a lasting relationship, but at least the two seem to have a good sense of that reality themselves.

What do you think? Do you think they can go the distance?
