BuddyTV interviews Tony Danza, actor, talk show host and the new host of The Contender.
Tony Danza, before he was Tony Danza, was an amateur underground boxer fighting out of Brooklyn. By his real name of Antonio Salvatore Iadanza, the future television star had a 9-3 boxing record by the time he was discovered by a producer in a New York gym. From there, Danza got his start on television in the highly-acclaimed comedy
Taxi, and the rest is history. Now, with a full career to look back on, it's all come full circle for Danza, who hosts the fourth edition of
The Contender, which premieres tonight on the Versus channel.
The Contender, which pits undiscovered boxers in a season-long tournament. We recently had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Tony about
The Contender.
Below you will find the full mp3 audio of the interview.
I advise you listen to the mp3 of the interview if you get the chance. Tony is one charming dude. We discussed the new season of The Contender in great length, and what his role on the series would be. The Contender 4 was filmed entirely in Singapore, in part to try and appeal to the Asian boxing fanbase. This is the first season of The Contender to take the boxers away from their families, and thus Tony acted as their family. He cultivated close, personal relationships with the contestants, and Tony was very proud of this fact.
I also got to ask Tony about a rumor from earlier this year regarding his possible appearance on The Celebrity Apprentice. It was reported early on that he would be a cast member on the show. Tony assured me that this was nothing but a rumor, and that he turned down their offer. He continued to say that he's turned down all sorts of reality shows over the year, and only took The Contender because boxing is something very close to his heart. The Celebrity Apprentice was another in a long line of failed attempts to bring Tony to reality TV.
The Contender premieres tonight, Wednesday, December 3, on Versus.
