After helping prevent a showdown between the United States and the Soviet Union in the aftermath of President Reagan's shooting in last week's episode, there's no rest for The Americans, Elizabeth and Philip. In "COMINT," they are given several risky assignments and neither of them will come out of it unscathed.

Spoiler alert: This article contains The Americans spoilers and clips.

Official synopsis for "COMINT":

A crucial agent crumbles under emotional distress and threatens to topple a valuable network of KGB informants. Professionally, Philip and Elizabeth are tasked with infiltrating the FBI's new communications encryption system while personally they are forced to grapple with one of the darker aspects of life as a spy.

In the preview, Elizabeth completes a successful mission, but it's not without a painful cost when the target beats her with a belt. She acts like it's business as usual, which is an unfortunate reminder of the dangerous business they are in and the personal sacrifices they have been forced to make.

With their marriage becoming more real each day, it's no surprise that Philip is furious that his love was hurt in that way and wants to deal the man who did that to his wife. Of course, Elizabeth has taken care of herself for so long, she doesn't want him to do anything.

Meanwhile, the spy game continues between the FBI and the KGB. "COMINT" looks to be another thrill ride gathering intelligence, while heart-wrenching personal relationships to be explored.

The Americans airs Wednesdays at 10 pm ET on FX.
