Former 'Amazing Race' Winner Alex Boylan Readies to Go 'Around the World For Free'

Alex Boylan, with best friend Chris Lukc, won the second ever edition of
The Amazing Race. On Tuesday, September 18, Boylan will set out for an even more epic adventure. Boylan, in association with former
Survivor contestant Burton Roberts and Emmy nominated director Zsolt Luka, is going to go "Around the World For Free." Boylan and Luka, armed only with their luggage, will leave the studio of the CBS Early Show on the morning of the 18th with absolutely no money in their pockets. They will travel around the world penniless, relying on only common goodwill and the advice and charity of the online community. Travel partner Luka will act as cameraman for Boylan's weekly eight to 12 minute online “episodes” chronicling their travels.
Boylan and team have created Around the World Productions and this trip, dubbed “Around the World for Free” is their first project. The online series will be interactive. At AroundtheWorldforFree.com, internet users will set Boylan's itinerary, give advice on where to visit and even offer up places to stay. Bolyan, via satellite, will give live web updates every day.
Where did the idea come from? Bolyan says, “This is the most fascinating project I've ever been involved in. I'm risking it all on this project. I'm one of the producers, and really the creator of this. The idea came to me when I was in Florida three years ago. Someone told me, ‘It's easy for you to travel, you make a lot of money.' I replied, ‘If I had no money I could go around the world.'”
The project is meant to increase awareness of foreign lands and their people. Bolyan believes that Americans can be overly xenophobic. “We just live in this world with an absolute misconception of other countries. I don't think they hate America as much as we think they do. I believe the world is a good place even though some bad things happen.”
Bolyan is looking to complete his journey to South American, Europe, Asia, and Africa in about six months.
