Chinese Food Takes its Toll on 'The Amazing Race'
Chinese Food Takes its Toll on 'The Amazing Race'
It's time to leave Bangladesh, it's far too densely populated. Teams will now fly to Hong Kong, China, then travel by bus and ferry to search for the Cheung Po Tsai Cave. I approve! Jill and Thomas leave first, and have no idea who has been eliminated, just that they gave Brook and Claire a U-turn. Jill and Thomas go to a travel agency then back to the hotel, and everyone else goes to the airport. Jill and Thomas are not happy to see Brook and Claire when they get to the airport. "Don't hate us, k?" "you should take it as a compliment!"

Seeya in Hong Kong, where everyone will be tied up! They run to the bus and Jill and Thomas get on the first one out. Thomas, in possibly his most offensive moment yet, says they're going to "Ching Chong Island." Maybe he didn't know what he was saying?

Nick and Vicki run to the ferry, but Vicki struggles with asthma. Maybe yelling will make it better, Nick thought to himself. They're stuck on the next ferry, which leaves half an hour later. Nick, who just a few legs of the race ago vowed not to yell anymore, tells Vicki, "I'm sick of you being sorry." Ouch. He says he's not stopping next time and she needs to suck it up. She's not the kid from the movie, Sidekicks, Nick! Geez!

Claire, like Vicki, is struggling to keep up with her teammate. Jill and Thomas reach the clue box first, and learn that they will get on a ferry and find Majesty Chinese Restaurant for their next clue. Brook and Claire are starting to fall apart. Is Brook the new Thomas? No, they hugged it out.

Karaoke!! At Majesty Chinese Restaurant, the teams receive their Road Block. They have to use chopsticks to find fake food hiding with the real food. Any food they get that is real, they have to eat. That's what I'm talking about, Amazing Race! Nat and Kat arrive first, and Nat looks at the buffet, followed by Thomas. Brook and Claire arrive and Claire wants to do the karaoke, but it's eating, not karaoke. So Claire has to eat a bunch of food, while Brook dances on stage. Poor Claire. Claire sums it up: "all of the Road Blocks I've gotten, I've assumed it's been something else, and all of them have been horrible." Remember the watermelon? Oy.
Also, Claire is a picky eater. But at least Brook is having fun getting the crowd to root for Claire.

Nat finds the fake food first, and receives the clue pointing them toward a statue of Bruce Lee. Nick and Vicki are way, way behind. Nat and Kat find the statue, where a clue box reveals the next Detour: "Ding Ding" or "Sampan." Ding Ding sounds crazy, they have to ride a trolley, looking for three signs that, when put together, reveal the location of the next Pit Stop. If they can't figure it out, they have to make a return trip and start all over. For Sampan, the teams will get a cage with two parakeets and board a boat and search amongst hundreds of boats for the one that matches the registration number on their cage. This Detour is crazy and I'm all about it.

Thomas finds a fake shrimp, and he and Jill move forward. Claire continues her search as Nick and Vicki catch up. Nat and Kat choose to take the Sampan and look for boats in the dark. Jill and Thomas choose Ding Ding. Vicki gets ready to eat lots of food as Brook admits to us that Claire is supposed to be on a diet for her wedding. Oh man!

Apparently, you have to keep parakeets entertained by blowing a whistle. Awesome? Jill and Thomas miss the three signs on their first trip, as Thomas coaches Jill that the signs will be "something distinct, look at the ground even!" And Claire threw up. At least she made Nick smile.

Gross gross gross! The puking keeps going, but Brook says that's how they did it in the Renaissance. It's true! Finally, Claire finds the fake food and the crowd is all riled up about it. I am, too, go Brook and Claire! Jill and Thomas miss the signs on their second trip, too, and grab a cab to head to the other detour. Vicki is starting to feel sick, too, with little help from Nick.

Brook and Claire choose Sampan, as Jill and Thomas find their boat, like, right away. Dang. The Pit Stop is at Statue Square. Nat and Kat find their boat shortly after and find a taxi before Jill and Thomas. Hilariously, their cab driver tries to pull over to pick up Jill and Thomas. No! It's a race!

Nat and Kat are first to the Pit Stop (yay!), followed by Jill and Thomas. Nat and Kat are the only team that hasn't argued yet. As Majesty Chinese Restaurant starts to close, Vicki is still struggling to find the fake food. Nick advises her not to even chew, but it doesn't keep Vicki from puking. Unlike Brook and Claire, Nick and Vicki decide that throwing up isn't worth it and Nick wants to quit. Nick declares that "this is stupid." Vicki is a total champ, though, and hates quitting so she keeps eating muscles. Her hand is shaking as she hands the fake food off for a clue.

Brook and Claire aren't having much luck, either. Nick and Vicki opt for Sampan, which surprises me. Maybe it's just because we got to see them, but the signs seemed a little easier, especially after you've just been throwing up. At least the signs are lit up? I don't know, I'm on my couch, not in Hong Kong.

Brook and Claire head to the Pit Stop as Nick declares that more things are stupid. Nick wants to quit, so he lays down on the boat and complains. Not cool. Vicki declares it "the worst day ever," and I wouldn't argue against that. Nick is not a good teammate.

After enough whining from Nick, they decide to take the six hour penalty. Phil looks displeased. Still, Phil tells them it's a non-elimination round (oh, why bother?) and Nick looks less than thrilled. So they will have a six hour penalty and a speed bump ahead of them on the next leg. Maybe they'll actually try next time? Who knows? Is there any way they can come back from this so late in the Race or will Nick's attitude bog them down again?

Next week the Race is going to the North Korean border! It looks like it's going to be delightful and insane.

What's your take on Nick and Vicki? Can Nick recover? Should Vicki have stuck it out and tried to finish the Detour? Who do you want to win?
