A trio of
Supernatural fans is turning the rabid interest in the show into a grass roots charity organization. Fandom Rocks was founded by a group of civic minded fans whose aim is to bring television fans together to make donations to worthy causes in the name of the shows they represent. For the first time around, the Supernatural fans decided to give to a homeless shelter in Lawrence, Kansas, where
Supernatural’s famous Winchester brothers hail from, as well as an international charity fund named SOS Children’s Villages.
According to the Lawrence Journal World, the organization has raised $400 of its $1,000 goal. 25 people from six countries have contributed to the fund raising so far, with more exposure the founders hope will come more money.
The idea has some definite potential considering the devote following of many television shows and the generosity that tends to halo around groups of people with similar interests. The limit to the good that can be done in the name of shows like Supernatural or Lost by accessing the pockets of the fan base is incalculable.
Even though the three founders of fandom-rocks live nowhere near Lawrence, they wanted to help out an area was that was symbolic to
Supernatural and would resonate with the fans. “It’s not so much that we’re in Lawrence. It’s that because of the show, by that extension, Lawrence has become important to all of us,” said Brande Ruiz, one of fandom-rocks founders.
Fandom-Rocks two remaining founders, Dana Stodgel of Illinois, and Rebecaa Mawhinney of Canada, along with Ruiz, surveyed Lawrence for agencies in need of a helping hand and then turned their candidates over to voters to decide which organization become the focus of their fundraiser.
There is no word yet on where Fandom-Rocks will go next, or even in the name of what show, but you get the feeling these innovative fans have started a trend that can only get better. For more information visit
