I love any television show that isn't afraid to break the rules and try something completely outside the box. The X-Files
and Buffy the Vampire Slayer
always took plenty of creative risks, and Supernatural
has followed in their footsteps by subverting its formula whenever possible. This week's episode, entitled "Monster Movie," shakes things up yet again by bringing the Winchesters face to face with some of Hollywood's most famous creatures. The brothers battle Dracula, a wolf man and a mummy in the special black-and-white installment, which also features a sweeping orchestral score that would fit perfectly in a movie from the 1930s.
To get fans ready for Thursday's new Supernatural
, we have three exciting clips from the episode.
The CW's official description of "Monster Movie" reads: "Dean (Jensen Ackles
) and Sam investigate several murders at Oktoberfest. The first victim was found with bite marks on her neck, much like a vampire would leave, while the second victim has wounds that look like a werewolf attack. After a mummy rises from his crypt, Dean determines that a shape-shifter demon is terrorizing the town as iconic monsters from the old Hollywood movies."
The first clip finds Sam and Dean looking into a vampire attack that took place not in Transylvania, but Pennsylvania. Dean is excited to hunt down some monsters again without having to worry about any grand moral dilemmas, but Sam is still worried about the impending apocalypse.
The Winchesters stop by a local bar to take a break from the investigation in the next clip. Dean flirts with the bartender by calling her a "wench," which actually doesn't get him a beer in the face. I guess she's really into the medieval spirit of Oktoberfest. When the lady asks what Sam (Jared Padalecki
) would like, Dean jokes that his brother is a Christian Scientist who would never dream of boozing it up.
The final clip shows Dean having a face-off with Dracula himself, and certainly gives a great sense of the tone this episode is going for. After a short confrontation that ends with Dean ripping Drac's ear off, the most famous vampire in the world hops a fence and rides away on a scooter. You have to see it to believe it.
The new episode of Supernatural
airs Thursday at 9pm on the CW.
