Is a vengeful angel turning ordinary citizens into instruments of divine justice? Sam and Dean investigate a series of murders committed by individuals who claimed to be acting on God's will, delivered to them by an honest to goodness angel.
The very substance of the case summons a familiar rift between the brothers. Sam is on the verge of accepting the events at face value, Dean on the other hand is his agnostic self not willing to accept the figures of Christianity as tangible beings.
The cases from the get go are interesting. A hooker knifes a pedophile and happily turns herself in. When Sam poses as an intern at the mental hospital she calls home, he observes her as strangely relaxed and at peace with what she has done.
When they 'visit' the home of another of the victims, yet another scumbag mind you, they find a common thread. They all attended the same church. A quick visit to the church reveals that the pastor there had died a few months earlier... around the time the murders began.
A trip to the pastors crypt brings an angel like visitation to Sam who now questions whether or not they should stop the murders if they are truly God's will. Dean is uncompelled. He believes they are dealing with a vengeful spirit. Dean opts to summon the priests spirit with a séance.
As they go to pick up supplies for the ritual, Sam sees a strange light around a rough looking dude and decides that this is his mark from god. Sam intervenes, sending Dean back to the crypt to perform the séance as he follows the shady dude to see if there is anything death-worthy about him.
At the crypt Dean's faith is shattered when he summons the spirit of the murdered priest and learns that the 'angel' is indeed the deeply confused spirit of the priest. With the help of the current priest they are able to put the spirit to rest.
Meanwhile Sam discovers that the guy Dean felt compelled to open a can of God's will on is indeed a scum bag as he sets out to rape a girl in his car. Sam breaks it up and rescues the girl, taking off after bad guy in a car chase that ends in a freak accident when a pole from a plumbing truck impales the baddie.
Back at the motel, Dean despairs over the blow to his faith when Sam explains to him that what he saw could only be described as the will of god. He is beginning to believe.
