My mind is still trying to recover from last week's brain-melting episode of
Supernatural. In case you missed the thrilling premiere, Dean was yanked out of Hell by an angel of the Lord named Castiel. Apparently, God knows all about the Winchester brothers, and he sent Castiel down to Earth to give Dean some work to do. In addition to that jaw-dropping revelation, we learned that Sam has been perfecting his mental mojo with help from Ruby, who jumped into a new meat suit after last season's finale. Sammy can now kill demons just by closing his eyes and focusing his concentration, which is a talent he doesn't plan to share with his brother.
On tonight's episode, the ghosts of
Supernatural's past return to make Sam, Dean and Bobby feel very, very guilty.
Any episode of
Supernatural that references Judy Blume in its title is bound to be awesome. Other great Blume-inspired episode titles would be "Tales of a Fourth Grade Winchester," "Otherwise Known as Sam the Great," and "Freckle Juice." I’m not sure what that latter one would be about, but the title is too good not to use.
Tonight’s installment starts out with a woman named Olivia sleeping on her couch. She wakes up when her appliances start going wonky, and once she notices that she can see her breath she runs for her weapons cabinet. Olivia may be a bad-ass hunter, but she can’t escape the ghosts of two people she failed to save. One of them kills her, proving that some spirits can be very cranky.
Dean tells Sam that he was groped by an angel, and while Sam finds the idea perfectly sensible, Dean isn’t buying into the Biblical explanation. Bobby digs into the lore and finds that an angel can rescue a man from Hell, which makes Castiel’s story seem even more plausible. Bobby even thinks God may exist. Dean is Dean, so of course he’s kind of self-loathing and can’t see why God would give a damn about him. "I don’t like being singled out at birthday parties, much less by God," he says. He eventually agrees to entertain the possibility, though not until Sam gets him some pie. I'm with Dean. Always ask for pie up front.
