The announcement of
Supernatural's two newest cast additions was controversial to be sure. Supernatural fans were as vocal as ever in reacting to the addition of two female leads to work side by side with Sam (
Jared Padalecki) and Dean (
Jensen Ackles). Most of that uproar came from the notion that the girls may be positioned as love interests, combined with the seemingly low brow attempt at a fleshy ratings grab. Through the controversy,
Supernatural's creator Eric Kripke has been relatively silent about the new additions. Today, that silence was broken.
It is the CW's turn to take television critics on a press tour, and as you might have guessed the network and the shows creative staff can no longer dodge the controversy.
Studio exec Dawn Ostroff managed to evade any heavy questions about the casting additions, mostly by shrewdly combining the casting news with that of
Smallville's Laura Vandervoort. Since Supergirl is a legitimate part of the superman mythology,
Smallville fans are not nearly as broken up about having a pretty face thrown at them.
The same cannot be said for Supernatural fans. If you have been following the reactions to the reports here, you probably know that the vast majority of fans are acridly dismissing the move as a superficial one that will deflate the seriousness of the story. Perhaps Kripke's words to TV Guide will come them.
"Ruby and Bela, each in their own unique way, are dangerous, ruthless, more bad than good; and they'll each prove big trouble for Sam and Dean. We were excited to find both Katie and Lauren; they just popped off the screen for us, and they bring charisma and intelligence to their roles." Kripke told TV Guide today via E-Mail.
Kripke's description certainly offers a different image of the characters in contrast to what was assumed to be a network enforced order to beautify and sex up
Supernatural for the sake of attracting viewers.
