It’s hard to figure out where to start when writing about last night’s episode of
Supernatural? Do I begin with the Earth-shattering revelation that Dean was the one who broke the first of the 66 Seals, thus beginning the quest to bring Lucifer back to the world?
Or how about the fact that Sam is drinking demon blood by the pint and killing demons with a simple flick of the wrist? And then there’s Castiel, his doubts about what he’s doing, and his temporary allegiance with Anna. There’s also the little matter of two major
Supernatural characters from this season being killed off.
But if I had to pick the one
Supernatural moment that trumped all of the others, it would be Alastair’s revelation that Dean broke the first Seal.
After three seasons of being the stoic, tough guy, Dean sure has spent a lot of this season crying. As if finding out he’s not as tough as his dad wasn’t bad enough, he also has the added burden of knowing his weakness is what opened the door for Lucifer to walk the Earth. That’s a lot to handle for one guy, even someone like Dean Winchester.
Now it will be interesting to see how long it takes him to accept responsibility and became the savior he needs to be. As Castiel told him, the righteous man is also the only one who can stop Lucifer, so I suspect the rest of this season will focus on Dean’s journey to become that Righteous Man.
More importantly, let’s take a step back to see how complex this evil plan was. Azazel made a deal with Mary Winchester to drip demon blood into Sam’s mouth so he could be one of the special children who could then die so that Dean could make a deal to go to Hell so that he could be tortured and ultimately help break the first Seal. If that was really the plan all along, kudos to the demons who put together this masterful, long-term plan.
