The King of Hell has left the building. According to TVLine, Mark Sheppard, who plays Crowley on Supernatural, will not return for season 13 as a series regular.

Crowley, aka the King of Hell, was first introduced in season 5. He was a major recurring character for several years, but in season 10 Sheppard was promoted to series regular status alongside Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins. But after three years as a series regular, his time has come to an end.

The Cast Reveals Castiel’s Return>>>

In the Supernatural season 12 finale, Crowley sacrificed himself in order to trap Lucifer in the alternate universe known as Apocalypse World. While his death worked, it also happened to trap Mary Winchester on the dystopian parallel Earth as well.

Sheppard expressed his gratitude to the fans and the show in an Instagram post, explaining that it’s time for him to do something new.

So to all my #spnfamily everywhere… my crew and my fellow storytellers… thanks for the ride. Time for something new. Even when I lose…

While this news makes it seem like Crowley’s death won’t be undone, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Sheppard will never be seen again. On Supernatural, death is never the end so even though he won’t be a series regular, it’s entirely possible that Sheppard could come back (a la Jim Beaver’s Bobby).

Why Bobby Should Come Back>>>

Supernatural ended season 12 with a number of huge deaths which also included Castiel and Rowena. But the good news is that it seems Cas will be back.
