Studio 60 Suffers its First Casualty
Citing negative internet buzz, and an unexpected pregnancy, it is likely that Studio 60 will enter the 'edgy' arena of dismissing major characters this season in the form of Amanda Peet. Peet's character Jordan McDeere tested luke warm with critics, but it is the overwhelming negative buzz from bloggers that has Peet's position in doubt.
Studio 60 has been blessed with a huge hype campaign that started as early as May. Unfortunately, such hype quickly gets shows like this on the radar of bloggers around the world. Before too long scripts are leaked and hacked apart, then pirated copies of the premiere are popping up on youtube. Studio 60 is probably the most reviewed series prior to its actual premiere. Thanks to the Internet, that bubble between the May upfront and the September debut has been burst. Creator Aaron Sorkin told the L.A. Times, "It's unusual for backlash to begin before the show starts." Early drafts of the pilot script have been on the Internet for months. A pirated copy of the pilot was posted on YouTube in early August. Civilians and critics were blogging overtime with raves and pans. Said Sorkin, "I'm hoping now that the timing will work out that there will be a backlash against the backlash by the time we open."
