Biography

Jackson DeForest Kelley was an American actor born on January 20, 1920 in Atlanta, Georgia. He passed away from stomach cancer at the age of 79 on June 11, 1999. Kelley was most famous for his portrayal of Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the original television series of the Star Trek franchise, as well as its numerous subsequent movies. The son of a Baptist minister, he sang in a church choir as a boy, as well as performing solo on local radio station WSB in Atlanta. He graduated in 1938 from Decatur High School, and served in World War II, enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Forces.

Leonard “Bones” McCoy was played by DeForest Kelley in the sci-fi classic television series, Star Trek. An American Southerner and previously divorced, he was born in 2227 and attended the University of Mississippi as well as Starfleet Academy, graduating with a specialization in medical science and healing. He maintains a suspicious attitude towards advanced technology such as transporter (which he fears will scatter his atoms irrevocably), as well as a mildly racist attitude against Spock’s half-Vulcan lineage at the start. Despite his faults, he still serves as Enterprise’s chief medical officer and surgeon, often treating different races with considerable skill.
