The hype surrounding Zachary Quinto's portrayal of Spock in the big screen reboot of
Star Trek has got
Heroes fans all excited for the May 8 premiere. Will Quinto give justice to the sci-fi Vulcan? While supporters of the sci-fi franchise will have to wait just a few more days to find out, Leonard Nimoy, the actor who originally played Spock, already gives his assurance that the
Heroes actor nailed the role.
"Zachary Quinto is a very intelligent actor, and he's serious about his work, and he looks enough like me to make the whole thing work," Nimoy told
The Boston Globe about the
Heroes actor's role in the upcoming
Star Trek film from director J.J. Abrams.
"He pursued the role," he added. "He knew what people told him -- that he looked enough like me to do the job, so he pursued it, and he sought me out for conversation."
Quinto met and consulted with Nimoy on several occasions to prepare for his role on the sci-fi film, which also marks the
Heroes actor's feature film debut. In a recent
Star Trek press conference, Quinto revealed how much of a mentor Nimoy is to him. Likewise, Nimoy had a lot of pleasant things to say about the
Heroes villain.
"Zach made some choices that I thought were wonderful surprises to me, in playing the Spock that he played in this film," Nimoy said. We did not talk about specifics, like 'Do this. Don't do that.' We had very general conversations about the philosophy and psychology of the character, the philosophy of Star Trek and the fans' reactions to various aspects of Star Trek, but there was no specific instruction. It didn't need that, and it didn't call for that. But, watching him in the film, I'm very proud of what he did. I loved the idea that he is doing the character, and that he did it so well. And, I think we have book-ended the character. He has created a Spock that comes before the Spock that I portrayed in the series, and I'm playing a Spock that comes much, much later and us much more resolved, and is much closer to who I actually am today. So, I think it works extremely well, and I admire his talent."
Meanwhile, there are already talks about a sequel. According to
Variety, Paramount has already contracted
Lost's Damon Lindelof, plus
Star Trek scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman to work on the project.
"There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet," Lindelof said in a statement. "But we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."
