If "Balm" isn't the best episode from Sons of Anarchy, then I don't know what is. And it's not even the finale yet. This week, we get 90 minutes of honest-to-goodness TV and I'm not just saying this because I'm a fan of this show. Much of the 10th episode of Sons of Anarchy delves into Jax's decision to go nomad and the impact it brings on the rest of SAMCRO though, in the end, we find comfort in knowing that all hope is not lost thanks to Gemma's big tear-jerking reveal about her rape.
Sons of Anarchy is available on Amazon Prime.
After spending the last couple of episodes pondering on whether or not to leave SAMCRO, Jax has finally decided that he's had enough. The fire at Caracara may have been the last straw that pushed Jax to go nomad, but we all know that this has been an ongoing predicament all season long. But while Jax is a character of depth and substance, it's easy to see right through his decision to leave--- he obviously doesn't want to go because we all know deep inside that his heart is not in it. After all, he has proven time and again that he is the most loyal member of the club.
But Jax isn't the type who would swallow his pride so soon and that simple "yes" from Clay when Jax asked him straight out if he wants him gone is enough to push Jax further away. Unfortunately for Jax, the rest of the club, even though they think that going nomad is a bad idea, is willing to let him go just to restore some peace and order---which is confirmed as the club casts its vote and lays its final verdict. Seeing Jax rip off his SAMCRO patch off his jacket is one difficult scene to watch but what happens next is a far more gripping story.
Gemma, as hinted previously, has a lot of difficult decisions to make in "Balm." After talking to Jax about his father John Teller's manifesto, about going nomad and possibly committing suicide, she then realizes that she's the only one who can fix SAMCRO. She does so by inviting Jax, Tara, and Clay to all sit down at the table while she relives her nightmare. Gemma's rape revelation, however, is more than just exacting revenge on Zobelle. It's about letting go of her pride and reuniting the two men in her life, which is heart-breaking, pitiful and liberating all at the same time. And it works, at least it looks for now.
