So You Think You Can Dance: Previewing the Top 14 Performances

Darn it.  Looks like Abbey already said most of the things that I wanted to say at the moment, which pretty much questions whether the "random" hat picks are any random.  We've already mentioned some spoilers for tonight's So You Think You Can Dance, and judging from the way they look--the Evans doing Broadway, Phillip doing hip-hop again, and more possible troubles for survivor Vitolio, and Caitlin and Jason--it doesn't look so random.

Then again, I choose to be nice at the moment, solely because I'm still finding my way through the show.  Four weeks, and I'm feeling better about it.  Besides, I've already been a conspiracy theorist on American Idol--and, of course, that didn't work well.
Thank heavens, then, for back-up thought bubbles!  I remember an email exchange I had last week about Randi and Evan's dance--that very whimsical "butt dance", which I watched again on YouTube, and that is a rare thing--and the other end was wondering whether all the love was meant to be.  I said, well, duh!  Sure, they've not been out of their comfort zone more often than we'd want to, but out of their three performances, it seems they can take on any dance without struggling much.  They really are the pair to beat this season--although you can say they're also lucky to be working with Mia Michaels last week.  I dare you give me another dancer who can match up to them.  And I'm not being blinded by the butt.  Butt!  Sorry, can't resist.

This brings me to Phillip, who, to be honest, I cannot really figure out.  So what exactly does he have that's made him a fan favorite from the very beginning?  Okay, Chbeeb-heads, get ready to defend your man.  He's done pretty good stuff over the past three weeks, but I've yet to see that something special that Evan or Ade bring to the table.  I shall mention Nigel's words again--being a fan favorite can only get you so far, and you have to step up to continue to deserve that respect and trust.  There is a backlash, after all.  Well, tonight's not that night, since he's doing something we've seen him do already.  Fuel your conspiracy theories, skeptics.

This week on So You Think You Can Dance, we're down to seven pairs, and the stakes are obviously higher--forgive me for mentioning Brandon, since Mia Michaels is on the guest judge seat this week.  As always, the folks at SYTYCDism have spoilers for tonight--yay, they're finally complete!--so unless you're not willing to, here goes the list:

Randi and Evan: Broadway (Joey Dowling)
Jeanine and Phillip: hip-hop (Nappy Tabs)
Karla and Vitolio: quickstep (Jean-Marc Généraux)
Kayla and Kupono: contemporary (Sonya Tayeh)
Janette and Brandon: cha-cha (Jean-Marc Généraux)
Melissa and Ade: pas de deux (most probably Desmond Richardson)
Caitlin and Jason: pop jazz (Brian Friedman)

Quiz questions, kids: Would Karla and Vitolio's routine spell disaster for them?  Would Vitolio ever break out of that three-week blahnership with Asuka?  Would Caitlin and Jason finally prove themselves after a bad streak at the bottom 3?  Will Phillip ever do something different?  (Would you prove I'm no anti-Phillip man?  While I have something against people who I don't understand even if everybody else likes them, well, he's an exception for now.)

Oh, and what's that big announcement Adam Shankman was talking about?  Bonus points, kids.  That, and the possibility of a Michael Jackson tribute--although I think it'll be next week--on So You Think You Can Dance, returning tonight from 8pm on Fox.

Based on the spoilers, who stands the biggest chance of being at the bottom 3?
Caitlin and Jason
Karla and Vitolio
Kayla and Kupono
Janette and Brandon
Jeanine and Phillip
Melissa and Ade
Randi and Evan
