There are people in this world who tune in to the audition rounds of American Idol or
So You Think You Can Dance just to watch the talentless people who try to get on television. Those people are not me. I watch
Idol for the
Carrie Underwoods and the
Chris Daughtrys. I watch
So You Think You Can Dance for the
Sabra Johnsons and the
Danny Tidwells of the world. Last night's season premiere of the summertime reality tv show didn't necessarily give us a good idea of who will make the top 20. They filled more than half the time with people who should not only never be allowed to dance but also, never be on television again.
Things got creepy fairly early on last night when some guy stripped down to his tighty whities and danced around the stage for the judges. At one point, he even showed more than anybody ever asked for as a censor covered him up. Nigel was less than thrilled at his choice of attire and sent him on his way. When the guy in the mask showed up again, I literally fast forwarded through it. I had no interest in his act and knew he wasn't going to make it. We also were treated to the guy who thought his niche was being overweight. His niche SHOULD be that he's an outstanding dancer ... but it wasn't.
I really got annoyed when the show let Sex come back and audition. Sex is back ... and nobody is happy about it. The guy has auditioned for the show for the last 3 seasons and, of course, doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of making it. He also tried out for Bravo's
Make Me A Supermodel and they gave him airtime there, too. Until I saw that, I actually felt sorry for him. Now, I think it's just an act and it drives me up a wall that these shows continue to put him on television. He's not funny the way Alexis Cohen yelled, "Take it, Simon! Take it! Take it! Take it!" on
American Idol this season. He's just an idiot who took away 5 minutes of my life last night that I'll never get back.
If I had a say in how these shows ran, I'd put the great and even the good auditions on most of the time. A few bad ones every now and again isn't the worst thing in the world, I guess. A show that is passionate about dancing, however, might want to consider showcasing more of the people who actually take it seriously as opposed to those who make it into a joke.
