Last week on
So You Think You Can Dance,
Rayven Armijo and
Jamie Bayard were the first girl and guy to be eliminated from the competition. Tonight, the remaining 18 dancers select all new styles of dance to perform in their continued attempt to woo us viewers at home. Will Katee and Josh stay our favorites? Or will another pair outshine them tonight?
Stay with me throughout the entire two-hour broadcast, while I provide you with live thoughts. Then, check back later to see who I thought were the best and worst couples of the evening.
The top 18 dancers dance their two-second solos as Cat Deeley introduces them. And then she introduces our.....joodges! Tonight's guest judge is contemporary choreographer Mia Michaels. Wait, is Mary's hair really crazy tonight, or is just me?
This week, we get some video clips of each of the dancers explaining the best and worst things about his or her partner. This is dancers' chances to show America their personalities.
Thayne Jasperson, however, overdoes it a little bit. And man,
Chelsea Traille is so ripped, I"m jealous. This week, they have a jazz routine choreographed by Mandy Moore, danced to "Untouched" by The Veronicas. They have crazy ruffled costumes tonight that I think are so fun, but overall, I"m a little bored by the routine. Mia Michaels is disappointed in the performance because they didn't bring the intensity and chemistry. Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe agree with that sentiment, and Nigel goes on and on about how he doesn't like their outfits.
Mark Kanemura and
Chelsie Hightower dance next. Mark loves the way Chelsie's hair smells, and she likes his quirkiness. They've got the Argentine tango tonight, which is right up Chelsie's alley, since she's a ballroom dancer. Their performance tonight starts out very safe, and I'm afraid that I won't like it, but when the music changes, so does their attitude. It gets sexier and more exciting, making me sigh a breath of relief since I am definitely rooting for these two. As soon as they are done, Cat Deeley gets down on her hands and knees to fix Chelsie's shoe. Mia gushes over their performance. Mary loves
everything about it and ends her speech with a shriek. Nigel fakes us out for a second, but then says that it was great as well. He tells Chelsie that he would have liked to her be more sleazy, however.
Before
Jessica King and
William Wingfield's hip hop routine, we learn that Will likes Jessica's silly personality, and Jessica likes Will's focus and professionalism. Their tango landed them in the bottom three on last week's
So You Think You Can Dance, but tonight, they've got hip hop, dancing to "Whatever U Like" by Nicole Scherzinger. They have a few synchronicity problems, but they really bring a genuine hip hop attitude and feel to the dance. Mia chides Jessica for being too invisible next to Will. She thinks Will is a genius, though. Nigel disagrees and thinks that Jessica did a great job.
Matt Dorame loves Kourtni's eyes, and
Kourtni Lind loves how Matt always compliments her. (Incidentally, Kourtni is only 18, but doesn't she look, like, at least 37?) They've got the foxtrot tonight and they dance to one of my favorite jazz standards of all time, "A Foggy Day in London Town." They are so graceful and old-timey. Kourtni might look old, but she looks stunning in her green flapper dress. They make the foxtrot look so easy and light. Mia loves how great and Old Hollywood their performance was. She feels that Kourtni was lacking, however. Mary nitpicks their footwork. Nigel comments that Matt's arms look too soft, and criticizes that they were too "posey" and unnatural; however, he still thoroughly enjoyed their performance.
Next up,
Courtney Galiano loves how strong Gev his, and
Gev Manoukian loves how pretty Courtney is. He also shares that last week on
So You Think You Can Dance, he had to wear a dance belt, which is like a thong that keeps his man-parts in place. Ha! They dance a contemporary piece choreographed by Mandy Moore. Aww, Gev totally has a crush on Courtney, which I find adorable. Wow. I'm speechless. They are so convincingly in love with each other in this performance. It's really beautiful and wonderfully danced. Mia gets down on Courtney a bit, but praises Gev. Mary Murphy shrieks about how she loves them both. Nigel didn't believe their emotion during the dance, however. Cat Deeley calls them "the cutest little pocket couple."
Katee Shean and
Joshua Allen, my favorite couple from last week, dance a Tyce Diorio Broadway routine this week. These two have such a great connection with each other when they dance. They are great side by side as well as when they partner dance. The judges leap to their feet as soon as the number is over, and Nigel yells about how great and entertaining they were. Mary shrieks, and Mia goes on and on with nothing but praise. Seems like Katee and Josh are the couple to beat.
Susie Garcia and
Marquis Cunningham dance the salsa next. Now, I didn't like Susie at the beginning, but she has really grown on me. I'm expecting a lot from her tonight since salsa is her specialty. Uh oh, they get out of sync at the beginning, but it's immediately clear that Susie is stronger at this style than Marquis is. Woah, they do this really cool whip-turn lift in the middle! Marquis warms up towards the end and gets into the Latin groove. Mia gets booed by the crowd when she says that she wasn't crazy about it. Mary and Nigel echoes Mia's sentiments.
Twitch Boss, sporting some crazy glasses (just the frames), loves Kherington's cool attitude, and
Kherington Payne loves Twitch's muscles. This week, they choose the Viennese waltz, choreographed by Jean-Marc Genereux. It is a very special piece for Jean-Marc because he dedicates it to his daughter who is afflicted with a physical disability. They dance to "A New Day Has Come" sung by Celine Dion, which my gay best friend Steve would totally love. I can just see him beating his chest right now. (Hi, Steve!) Okay, back to the performance. I don't know if it's how the stage is lit, or the flowing white costumes they are wearing, but Twitchington just takes my breath away. 'SMarvelous! Mia is irked that Kherington was smiling throughout the entire performance, but Nigel steps in to defend her. Mary gets teary-eyed in complimenting them.
Comfort Fedoke and
Chris Jarosz are the final couple of the evening. Comfort likes Chris' humility, and Chris likes Comfort's versatility. Comfort doesn't like Chris' sweaty armpits - I don't blame her. Yay! They have a krumping routine tonight! It'll be interesting to see Chris try to krump. They dance to "Come and Get Me" by Timbaland. Good song, but it's distracting that all the swear words are censored out. Naturally, Comfort rocks the hell out of it, and Chris actually isn't bad either. Mia is a big fan of Comfort's, and is pleasantly surprised by Chris. Mary thinks that Comfort could have hit it a little harder, and that Chris was respectable. Nigel says that his granny is more gangsta than Chris - hilarious!
