What makes a super star? Is it years of acting experience or raw talent? We find out in Steven Spielberg's latest TV series, Smash. The new musical drama, from the producers of Chicago and Hairspray, takes viewers to the competitive world Broadway through the lives of two very different actresses that will do everything to become a star.
What to Expect from Smash Season 1
Julia Houston (Debra Messing) takes the lead in Smash
as a writer who comes up with the concept of "Marilyn the Musical" along with her team, consisting of her co-writing partner Tom Leavitt, musical producer Eileen Rand (Anjelica Huston) and director Derek Wills (Jack Davenport). Meanwhile, Karen Cartwright (Katherine McPhee) lands an audition to play the lead role of Marilyn Monroe. Though Karen has the charm, the talent and potential to have a successful acting career, becoming the star of the play is easier said than done especially when competition comes in the form of Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty), a veteran actress who's favored to play the part.Check out premiere photos of Smash>>
Besides the Karen vs. Ivy plot, viewers can expect a lot more on Smash season 1. Karen has to deal with the fact that her parents aren't totally behind her choice of career but it's a good thing she has seemingly supportive boyfriend, Dev (Raza Jaffrey), who works at the Mayor's office. Ivy, on the other hand, struggles with the harsh reality that she may be too old for the business.
More behind-the-curtains drama unfolds as Julia deal with the pressure of making a Broadway hit while balancing the needs of her husband Frank (Brian D'Arcy James). To complicate matters, her old flame Michael Swift (Will Chase) resurfaces into her life.
Smash is scheduled to premiere on Monday, February 6, 2012 on NBC.
